Graphics card scaling rather than monitor scaling.

Can I make my graphics card (6800GT) always scale the output to 1280*1024 instead of my monitor scaling a 640*480 game to 1280*1024 when a low res game is played in full screen mode?

Thanks.

Can you simplify the question for us simpletons?

Do you mean when you run an old game at a set resolution you want it to go in the middle of the screen being less pixelated, rather than bloating a low res game out to every corner of the screen?

I want my graphics card to always output at 1280*1024 by upscaling any lower resolutions rather than sending out a 640*480 signal for my monitor to upscale.

Its programmed not to upscale otherwise you wouldnt be able to output different resolutions, afaik the only way you can do it is to get an in game 1280x1024 option.

Really depends what game/program you're using. If it can't set resolutions itself there's not much hope. Any config file for the program you can disect? Can you mention what you're trying to do with what program?

If there's any video options at all, something which can work is if it can display in an overlay mode. For example Winamp's visualisations can be set at 640*480 but use a fake fullscreen overlay mode so they don't change the monitor res when they're playing.

Unless there's a third party program. I haven't looked. Might be a bit dodgy as it'll need to intercept and change screenmodes. I think one might exist but I may be having flashbacks to my Amiga which had (screen)mode promotion?

not quite what you want but my monitor can be told not to scale the display up. so if it is 800*640 it would display in the middle of the screen at that size with the outside black.
maybe that is an option if you just want it playable without distortion

he is asking if there is a way to force the card to output the monitors native res and upscale anything sent to the card to that native res. Usefull for games that dont have options for the res you require.

Come on guys its not hard to see what he's asking. It makes sence too, im sure a card could upscale better than a monitor - just look at what we can do with upsacaling dvd's.

Yep you have Nvidia forceware right so go into the forceware control panel and under the Digital Flat Panel Settings tab select Display Adapter Scaling. Depends on your TFT though as on some you cannot disable the scaling options regardless of gfx card settings (this is on DVI also unsure about VGA).

Aye, that's exactly it, thanks.

I can't find any of those options in the nvidia control panel.

I know what he's asking but I haven't seen this kind of upscaling done before.

Kreeeee - which version of Nvidia's drivers do you have? You should at least be able to see AWPC's suggestion. Although that scaling will just produce a small box on the screen if you use less than the native res.
