Graphics card upgrade advice

Ok, so after buying Napolean total war and with a holiday coming up, i'm likely to start playing games again as i'm really getting back into them.

I have a brand new rig, but i've had it crash out of Napolean: Total war a couple of times recently. The event viewer says:
Event Type: Error
Event ID ( two events ): 43029 and 52236
Source: atikmdag
Log: System

Apparently a total of 9 in the last 24 hours.
I also have a critical error in the last 7 days which game me a System service BSOD, which says:
EventID 41,
Source: Kernel-Power
Log: System

I have a feeling these are due to my graphics card. It also gets a little toasty at times ( which is normal for these apparently ).
I have the latest drivers, and i'm unsure if it's the fact it can't handle the game on the settings it auto selected or what ( high, although there is one setting higher ).

So.. to save my games crashing every now and then, ( I sometimes just get " Not responding " and don't know if this is in the event viewer )... Would I be better off with a brand new graphics card or buying another one of these to Xfire.
Its a ATI HD 4870 with 1gb memory.

I don't mind spending up to £250,.. but only if it will more than double the performance. I don't mind buying a new one of these cards if it will add a lot of performance.

My motherboard is MSI X58M and my PSU is Corsair 650W.
( Rig details in sig ).
