Graphics card upgrade for HDTV display

Hi guys, I need a bit of advice as I've just set my PC up to work through my 46" Sony Bravia X HDTV. I'm currently running a Gigabyte 6800GT at 1920 x 1080 (1080p) resolution and would like to know if an upgrade would speed things up dramatically. Games are quite playable at the moment (the display is fantastic), but I do find that my framerates are a bit lower than when I used my Samsung 913 monitor.

Would a 512mb X1900-XT (or XTX) be a better bet than going the NVidia route? Also what's the difference between the XT and the XTX?

My current PC is:

Gigabyte K8 NXP SLi
1 gig OCZ ram
3500 A64
Gigabyte 6800 GT
Audigy 2 ZS

I have thought about SLi but I had a bad experience last year when I bought a second Gigabyte 6800 GT and tried it. I had nothing but trouble, most things wouldnt work and I ended up returning the card for a refund from the place I bought it. I think I prefer buying one fast card than messing about with two again.

Edited to say I've just looked at that BFG and it looks very interesting and is a single slot solution. Thanks for the pointer.

GX2 is Sli m8

Dont spend anything if you can until after the G80 is launched which will be the middle of next month.

If you are connecting the HDTV via DVI then I would stick to nvidia. ATI drivers don't give anything like the same options when setting using HDTVs via DVI and most TVs you need them.

Secondly any 7800/79xx card will support all SD/HD acceleration features of the purevideo codec.

Thanks for the advice, I'm in no real rush to buy as my 6800 GT seems to be churning things around ok for the time being. Maybe I will wait to see what happens with the G80 cards.

This might be of interest but a couple of manufacturers have added HDMI interfaces to the cards. MSI and Gigabyte have 7600GS passive cards with Asus have a 7600GT that has a fan on it.

These cards also have an SPDIF passthru on them, I am looking to get one matched up with my HDA DTS sound card. This way can connect upto the TV via one HDMI cable. They also have the HDCP on them if that is important to you.

This should improve the situation in setting up the connections from the PC to a HDMI interface on a TV.

ATI also have some mid range X1600 cards with HDMI.

It will be interesting to see if the new 8000 midrange cards come out with some HDMI versions.
