Graphics card upgrade- help needed :)

hey all, long time reader, 1st time poster here

im currently looking for a graphics card upgrade, and with most of the people on here knowing a lot more then i do, any help is greatly appreciated :P


current spec

- Intel® Core™2 Extreme QX6850 (4 X 3 GHz) 1333MHz
- 4gig ram, cant remember the make ;o
- WINDOWS® VISTA Ultimate
- 768MB GEFORCE 8800 ULTRA

Depends also on what games he wants to play....

If crysis is your thing then get a gtx285. For everything else a 4870x2 will do you grand.

Personally the ATIs are winning me over more than Nvidia
 
Very little point in upgrading at that resolution, but if you 'had' to a GTX 285 would be what you are aiming at. ATI and Nvidia are releasing a newer cards in 2 weeks that will be similar in performance for quiet a bit less.

However I could keep keep the money for later in the year when the real 'next gen' cards are released.

4870x2 is slightly above £300 just now. Then again he might get a decent amount for the rare 8800ultra lol
 
IMO, buy a 4870 1GB and a higher resolution monitor.

Seems like a good idea. OCUK were doing a 1gb version for about £165, they may come down in price though, once it hits 6th April and the new 4890s come out or w/e.
