Graphics card upgrade help

Greetings

I’m thinking of upgrading my Geforce 8800gtx, but I’m wondering if it’s worth it now or a full upgrade next year. At the moment I have Quad Q6600 cpu, IP35-E mobo and 4 gigs ram. Will I be able to get a newer gen card or will it be limited by the cpu? Or can I buy a card and carry it over for my upgrade next year?

Any advice is very welcome, thanks.

personally i would wait, if you feel like your card isnt handling what you need it for, then upgrade. but if its fine just wait... thats what i would do

I absolutely agree with Aaleys, If you really need that upgrade then upgrade to a decent graphics card that suits your needs. However if your not in the need as much i'd stick with that card for now, since there will be new card released which obviously means the prices of the current latest cards will drop in price, i.g. gtx 480. If your really in need of the graphics card then i suggest a MSI 460 1GB model, which is very good and does a great job for it's prices. Hopefully this will help you decide.

How much would you say a 5970 will be once the 6000 series comes out?

Because I mean the 4890 is only about a hundread quid nowadays.
