Hi all this is my 1st post on this forum & i am in need of some help.
My pc is now 3 years old and i am still quite happy with it, except for my graphis card which is a Nividia Geforce FX 5200.
I am well into my gaming ie battlefield 2142, F.E.A.R and mainly 1st person shootas, the propblem is my pc wont look at C.O.D.4, M.O.H. allied assault, crysis, basically any of the latest games that are out.
I am not very educated in pc graphics cards but can i upgrade the graphics card for one that will play the latest games without having to change anything else in the pc ?? and if so what card should i buy and where do i buy one?? do i give p.c. world a visit?? or buy online??
So many questions.
NIVIDIA GEFORCE FX 5200. what card would do the trick for an upgrade??

My system is a AMD ATHLON 64 PROCESSOR
3000+,512MB RAM
NIVIDIA GEFORCE FX 5200

ANY HELP WOULD BE WELL APPRECIATED cheers guys.

Buckdude.

Claimed.

Your motherboard probably doesn't have PCI-Express (that's only a guess tho), so you're going to want to look at AGP type cards. That said, your RAM is going to hold you back on the latest games as well. RAM's pretty cheap atm, you'll notice a good bit of performance increase with another 512, or ideally going to 2gb if you can afford it.

You'd need a RAM upgrade too..512Mb simply isnt enough any more. You'd want at least 1Gb,preferrably 2Gb to ensure adequate gaming performance

As you have (I'm guessing) an AGP board then you're stuck with the most powerful AGP card available....This ought to do the trick

But really I'd say you're looking at a total upgrade in the near future if you want to continue gaming..new board / ram / cpu and graphics.Probably a new PSU too.

Good luck :D

Any decent GFX card will be bottle necked by your system.
I used to run a 8800gtx on a amd 64 x2 3xxx and 4 gig ram. When I tried the same card in a my new machine ([email protected] ghz, 8 gig ram etc), games which struggled before ran absolutely smooth.
So while you will ger improvement from a up-to-date gfx card, your system will bottle neck what you could have.
Also, check that you have the correct kind of pcie slot on your board (or even if you do have a pcie slot).

agreed on the total upgrade front.. buying an AGP card would be a complete waste of money, as they are extremely overpriced when compared to PCI-E cards.

Do you have a budget? I reckon you could build a machine capable of playing most modern titles at a decent res for ~£270, if you keep your current monitor :)

~£55 for an E2XXX
£18 for 2GB 6400
~£70 for a P35 mobo
~£60 for a pre-owned 8800
~£60 for a PSU

Yeah i think i need to buy a new base unit as i would like to keep my monitor & keyboard.
with santa coming to my house soon i could ask santa for a new base unit but i wouldnt want to spend much more than £350-400 quid on one so long as it plays the latest games

Any ideas guys ???

£350-400 will easily get you a nice build that'll play pretty much everything. Will you be able to keep your current HDDs, or do you need more/faster drives?

What resolution is your current monitor?
Will you need a new case, or will your current one do?

Another vote for the total upgrade here, its really flogging a bit of a dead horse upgrading that old rig - just wont be worth it, compared to how much it'd cost to slap new parts into the old case.

8800GT is a superb card, especially if you get a good price on 2nd hand - or even new for £80, if you can afford it.
