I am considering upgrading from two 780ti's to one single GTX 980 card

Going from 2 x 780ti to a single 980 is definitely not an upgrade at all, will be a lot slower. Even going to 2 x 980 will only be a small performance upgrade and definitely not worth the hundreds of pounds it will cost.

Depends if the games you play like SLI I guess.
