can i use a pcie 2.0 x16 ie gtx 650 on this system the computer is about 7 years old running xp. If not can you suggest a card i can use

many thanks

It's very difficult to tell from that information. What you need to find out is whether the PCI-E x16 slot is 2.0 or 1.0. Given the age of the system it could be both. If it's the former then you will be okay to run a new gpu although in all honesty you'll be massively bottle-necked by your cpu. I would think about saving £80-90 you'd spend on a GPU and think about a cpu/mobo/ram upgrade. You should easily be able to get something like an AMD Phenom II X4 bundle or basic i3 bundle second hand.

That board would have to be a PCIe v1.0 board. That in itself really means nothing, though as a PCIe v2 and v3 cards are backward compatible to PCIe v1.0.

The only issue you might have would be general MB BIOS compatibility with the card on such an old MB. MB BIOS updates are, I'm sure, long since gone, if a compatibilty issue were to pop up. Ususally not an issue but somtimes is.

The only way to know is to try it. But no, the PCIe version in itself is no reason you shouldn't try it.

I myself am running an PCIe v2.0 card in my v1.0 board.

As far as PSU requirements for the GTX 650:

Thermal and Power Specs:

98 C Maximum GPU Tempurature (in C)

64 W Maximum Graphics Card Power (W)

400W Minimum System Power Requirement (W)

One 6-pin Supplementary Power Connectors
