Graphics cards overclock differently on different mobos?

Until now, I thought I was really unfortunate in purchasing the lowest overclocking 4850 card in the world. It would only overclock to 640/1050, which by looking at other people is pretty darn poor.

Recently, Ive replaced my P35 motherboard with an Asus P5E (X38) with a view to crossfiring 2 cards, and low & behold, Ive managed to get a stable 675 on the core, and Im currently increasing the memory clock.

Im at a loss to why just replacing a motherboard makes an impact on graphics card overclock - PCIe speed is the same @ 100mhz, the CPU overclock is identical. Strange, but Im not complaining! And Im tempted to get another 4850 - current prices look really appealing!

Well, you re-installed windows, so perhaps it has something to do with drivers somehow?

I reinstalled Windows on my Gigabyte board too! Same result - low overclock, whether booting to Vista or XP.

You could likely have plugged the graphics card into a same model motherboard and gotten a different result.

You can two cards taken from the same production run and get different results. This is unfortunately the pot luck of wether you get a good clocker or not.

Try increasing your PCI-E to 109Mhz and see if you can clock it more
