Hi

I am about to buy and new system and would love a bit of advice please.

I will be getting either x2 1070 or x1 1080 cards and either a 1440p or 4k monitor, the monitor will have to be at the cheaper end of the spectrum, say £380 ish.

Now, firstly I'm not sure which way to go with the cards, more hump short term with the x2 1070's or the x1 1080 which long term may have another 1080 added 12 months or so down the line. Advice please???

These cards/card will be used with, as I said either a 4k or 1440p monitor. I'm really don't know which way to go. Is there that much of a difference between 1440 and 4k??

Could you please help with suggestions of which monitor may best suit either option and maybe help me get my head around a very expensive decision.

I have been looking at Asus monitors but if anyone has found a little gem that will fit in with the above I am open to suggestions

Any assistance will be very gratefully received...

Steve

That's the way I was thinking, but can't help think I'm missing out on something not getting a 4k system, I will just have to upgrade again at some point??

Even 1070 SLI may struggle at 4k, aka 60 fps min. :)

At the moment I don't think that many games really make the most of 4k, in time that will change.

The other option would be ultra wide 1440p, not for me, but I have 2 1080p screens as well as my 1440p for non gaming stuff.

That surprises me 1070 sli will struggle with 4k... That puts a whole new light on things

Well struggle to keep a min 60fps in every game (and SLI won't work well on every game), but if you paying £800+ I think you should have a premium experience. :D

All depends on what you standards are. :)

One thing that suprises me, people will buy the most expensive video card available, and attach it to a subpar monitor??? Surely the monitor is arguably as equally important as the GPU? afterall the monitor is what you look at to enjoy your games, obviously framerates etc matter, but monitors matter equally, if you go for a higher hz monitor like a 144hz etc, its night and day the difference in performance, and then add in an adaptive sync again its night and day in performance between having and not having...

Then theres larger screen estate etc...

I just cant fathom buying a card that utterly destroys everything at max settings on a 1080p and leaving loads of wasted potential behind, when you can go to a 1440p or 4k screen, turn down a couple of settings and arguably get a much better experience...

OP if it was me, i'd opt for the 1080 card and get a decent 1440p 144hz G-Sync screen, you wont regret it.

Maybe worth mentioning that if the 4k is the same size as a 1440p monitor you can turn down some settings and still have a better picture as higher pixel density reduces the need for anti-aliasing effects - so while games may not run on 'max' settings you don't need max to get better image quality vs maxed on 1440p which helps with hitting framerate targets. For some reason on here some people never consider non-max an option even though they're compromising their experience as a result.

Edit: I started writing this before Si posted :p

Bloody hell, I'm going to have to have a think on this. 4k or 144hz... It would be great if you try these type of systems out before buying but not where I live i'm afraid..

Best we have down here is PC World, and I think they have just shut down..

Thanks for all of the advise. 144hz it is...... Now to find the best monitor I can get for £550??

Any suggestions......... please
