Graphics corruption on laptop once Driver installed

Is it possible for a damaged onboard GPU to only show itself as being damaged when the driver is installed?

Its an old acer laptop with sis 661mx (i think) on board graphics.
Its ok without the driver but as soon as its installed the desktop is impossible to view. Only by disabling the graphics adapter in the device manager (via safe mode of course) is the desktop restored.
