Graphics driver update issue

Hi

Updated my graphics card driver last night using GeForce experience. Part way through install the screen went black. That's not unusual but this time it never came back. After about an hour I tried a restart but nothing. I know the computer is booting as I get the windows music through the speakers but I'm just getting no display output. The fans on the gpu are whirring away as well. I've tried using the other port on the graphics card and switching from hdmi to Dvi but neither has worked. I don't have onboard graphics on my mobo or an alternative monitor so bit at a loss as to what to do next. Detail of my computer as far as I am able withou getting into it:
Mobo - asus
GpU - not sure on brand or model but GeForce
8gb ram
Running windows 7

Grateful for any advice

I should also add that it's not a windows display issue as I get black screen all throughout the boot process too so can't go into bios or boot in safe mode

Boot up in safe mode, uninstall all drivers and try again.

Edit: Just seen your second post. That is rather odd!

Indeed. When I turn my monitor off and on again and I searches hs, Dvi and vga for input it takes longer to scan the connected ones but still finds nowt. Just shows no signal on each then goes to sleep

Do you have integrated graphics? What is your exact motherboard model name, number and CPU?

The card doesn't have an hdmi port. I use a dvi to hdmi convertor on the back of the gpu ports. I suppose I could try the telly. That's a mission coming up as neither is particularly mobile

grumpy have you tried pulling out the card and reseating it? sometimes strangely that works; if not looks like dragging pc to TV :( and testing; another test to try is if you have a windows dvd or usb and try to boot to that and see if it comes up...if it does and can you can see; means might of borked your windows build.

What usually happens in this situation and I've seen it a lot is Windows is trying to use the wrong display port. Its increasingly a problem with multi port options and trying to find which is the default one can take some trial and error. Whenever you change the driver it will almost always default to the er, default one. I usually have to sort out displays after an update i.e. the monitor will always be black/blank and I have to use the TV to sort them out again. If you're using a non standard way of connecting i.e. dvi to hdmi this could make it worse. It would be nice if there was BIOS option to change the default port.

Having said all that though and you say you've tried all the ports it sounds like the driver is suspect. But try the TV (get a long lead if its not a very long away, I have a 3 or 5m lead, can't remember which but it's long)

Sadly it's in another room so it a rather daunting prospect. And as its hdmi I suspect it won't help... I've reseated the card and still no joy. Will borrow another gpu from my father in law over the weekend and see if I can fix the drivers that way

So I have now tried two other graphics cards with no sucess. One was a self powered card whic rules out a fault with the power supply to the card. I've also tried moving it to a different PCI-e slot and no change. I'm really struggling to understand how a windows driver update could have completely cocked up the graphics output...

So now I've tried on another TV, no joy. Then I tried removing the cmos battery to see if that helped and now I get a boot device error. Computer now at computer shop. Will let you know what was wrong in a few days

Right.... A further update to this. The computer shop found nothing wrong bar the fact my HDD is a bit full (which could have cocked up the driver install) but they were getting graphics output. I asked them how they connected the computer to the monitor and they said dvi to vga. I'd never tried this as I presumed dvi to dvi would be more stable than connecting to vga through a converter. But any way I have now dug out an old vga cable and have graphics output. I've cleared some hard drive space and updated my graphics driver again but still dont seem to be able to get the other outputs working. I've got both vga and hdmi plugged into the computer and monitor. When I go into the nvidia control panel it recognises I have two displays plugged in, one vga and one hdmi but the second I remove he vga the monitor goes blank. I've tried rebooting with just the hdmi but the only was I can get display is to boot with only vga in. Once I have display I can add/remove hdmi but if i switch display on the monitor those are blank. Grateful for thoughts on what next
