Graphics & Gameplay That Changed Gaming For You

bah someone beat me to tomb raider on the ps1.

Having played games since a little before spectrums i could list loads if i could be bothered to remeber them. But tomb raider 1 was for me the real jump from 2d gaming to proper 3d gaming. And there was 1 particular moment that will remain in my memory for a long time, standing on the sphinx as the camera pans out and the music kicks in! Bah I'm going to make a list anyway:

Graphics:
GT series
Far cry
Privateer 2 the Darkening
Final Fantasy VII (Cutscenes)
Mortal Kombat
Streets of Rage 3
Myst series

Gameplay:
Dizzy Games
Prince of Persia (original)
Privateer 2 the Darkening
Civilisation series
Zelda Series
Castelvania (earlier games)
SSX Series

Sound Special Mention:
Solfeace (I made the mistake of paying 300 quid for a mega cd, but sticking solfeace CD quality music through my hifi was simply amazing!!)

Probably quite an eclectic list that!

Just like Overclick, I come from a time shrouded in mist where people used to program their own text based adventures on BBC B's and type lines of code from magazines only to find out it would not run as the mag had a typo :p.

Graphics;
Elite (BBC B)
Starglider
Wolfenstein 3d (and later doom).
Halflife
F15 Strike Eagle - Used to take it to college on a 5 1/4" floppy key disk to play it on their PC's before getting a 386 of my own in around 1987 :D.
Falcon 3 (flight sim)
Apache Longbow (helicopter sim) - watching the hellfire streak away in to the night then curve up in the air before tipping over and burying itself in the roof of a tank was truly wonderful in 1995.
Farcry
Stalker (with complete mod)
Doom 3 - Really didn't like the game but had to admire the graphics.
Conflict Freespace II - Space combat on a large scale. Fly up to one of the capital ships and it really was 'look at the size of that thing'. Seeing the rocket trails from 20 torpedoes streaking towards the hospital ships you were trying to protect was just beautiful (not in a "they're going to blow up the wounded people" kind of way naturally :)).
X3 - Beautiful universe, buy, build and manage factories and trading whilst equipping a mega war fleet. Masses of expansions available. This game is certainly one of my great life eaters and the partial cause of one of my breakups with a girlfriend.
Fallout 3 - Watching the nukes falling in the distance from the radar site you just launched them from in the glow of the setting sun.

Gameplay;
Elite
Wolfenstein 3D
Halflife
Farcry
Stalker

Planescape Torment - Cannot be included in the graphics section as there were many other games with the same sprite based isometric view. The story was fantastic though with a very different twist compared to the usual trundle through the woods.
Mechwarrior 3 - Big robots firing rocket salvo's to decimate all. What is not to love. Great story too.
Battlezone II - Build the factories, build the vehicles, drive the vehicles, kill the bad guys. RTS and FPS all in one.
Fallout tactics - Great addition to the fallout universe. Realtime rather than turn based. Allows you to carry a .50 browning and mow down the bad guys. great fun if a little difficult in places.
FF VII - For the story and the cutscenes.

I am sure there are lots more but these are the ones that spring to mind.

Got to agree with Rimblock on Apache Longbow - I had an Amiga 1200 and a flatmate bought a spanking new Pentium 120MHz PC. He played Jane's Apache Longbow a lot on his pc and we used to watch with our jaws dropped at the 3d textures and the hellfires streaking for the tank kill. Brilliant game, watching smoke rise in the distance....sniff.... Made me buy my first PC a couple of months later - Pentium 200 MHz.

Battlezone 2 needs to be added to the gameplay list I think, I'd forgotten about it. Never been anything quite like it.

Also, can we make a list of all the people who are just naming games, and point and laugh at them?

Graphics (in no particular order):

UT99
Carmageddon
GTA1 + 3
