Ok so tonight i thought i could smell something burning...then at 9.30 my screen wentblack...i checked my PC one more time and nothing seemed to be acting abnormally though i did realise it was a bit hot...so i took the case cover off put my finger on the graphics card and ouch! Must have been over 100 degrees....much much higher than that infact. Im very surprised it hadn't caught fire.

I amnow typng with a blister on my burnt middle finger :(. Anyway pay day comes soon and so i guess that goes straight into the new graphics card rather than my Iceland trip but oh well!

What anoys me is there seems no official card between £50 and less budget cards to over £100 4850's ect. (due to nvidia charging stupid prices)

I hear the 4650 is coming out soon, do we think that will be any good.

I run at 1280x1024 res and wouldn't like spend over £70 really. I get £130 from my first shifts of work ive done (im at college) but i really don't want to spend it all on the graphics, as it was origionally intended for iceland (the country!)

Anyway yeah...is there any card out there with say 8800GT performance for £70. I definitley want the card new.

Ati are releasing the HD 4830 soon (this month someitme) for hopefully about £70-80. It's supposed to compete with the 9800gt price wise but outperforms it.

You sure it wasn't just the fan got stuck/stopped? I've had that happen with my old 5950 ultra back in the day but once I sprayed it out with some compressed air the card booted up fine and ran happily til it was retired - aside from the fan sticking every few months.

I'd rather buy a new one mate...its a x1650 sooo.....

Why not just get a 8800gt?

And yes i was going to get 8800GT, just wondering if thers something better and the 4830 seems the right one. I will need it quite imminently though...hmm decisions.

Also looking at OcUK it really seems that nvidia aren't dropping their prices much unless i take my trade elsewhere.

Edit: just realised that theres also a 9600GT as someone was talking about...hmm is it still there.

Edit2: ok so its a decision between the 9600Gt and the 3870XT ut seems. 3870xt just edges it right, what about their heat...the 9600GT seems to look a bit more stylish.

The 9600GT edges it with AA, although if you want smooth FPS you'd probably only enable AA in lighter titles anyway. The 3870XT pulls away at higher resolutions without AA.

Ahh very nice, i think i will go for this. The cooler looks a bit naff on it though for overclocking and i dont wanna be changing coolers on things.

The Gainward ATI Radeon HD 3850 Pro 512MB and the Gainward ATI Radeon HD 3870 are the same card except the xt is clock higher.

Right im going to order a 3870 very soon, if anyone really thinks i should do different then jump in now!

Let me know how you get on. What is your full system btw?

I'm still deciding which card to get (as you know from my other thread) but I have narrowed it down to a 3850, 3870 or 4670 (all 512MB).
