graphics or CPU upgrade?

my machine is:

3ghz P4 530J
X850XT
2X1gb DDR2 (533) corsair value.

should i sell my graphics card and get a newer one, or would a 3ghz P4 be causing a bottleneck so buying a new GFX would be a waste?
I can wait til next year to buy a GFX once DX10 becomes mainstream..

....Should i buy an E6600 Core 2?? (my mobo supports it)

Buy a 6300 and a 7900gs.

Would be a massive jump.

thank you for your recommendation, i will likely buy a 6300 in january, then maybe upgrade next year sometime, before i go to university.
im not sure about the graphics card though, will the X850XT not cut it for games such as BF2142 + supcom etc?

also, is the x1900gt is a good contender to the 7900gs?

Depends what resolution you're running at.

My 6800gt runs supreme commander not too badly at 1280x1024 and BF2 really well.

I run at 1280x1024 res all the time.
i cant see the graphics upgrade being worth the money??

edit: will i benefit from the e6300? most modern games support multicore.
and i feel my CPU is bottlenecking, i get terrible performance and i dont know why, its definately not software related.

well if yo uonly doing one of them then i would say do the cpu for sure.

Im the same m8, games like BF2 seem to stutter fairly bad. Ive got a XFX Geforce 7800GT which is still pretty good I think, and its my CPU that is holding me back. So for xmas im getting a 6300, DS3 mobo and Geil 6400...hopefully i should see some sort of improvement

and if im still not happy (which i shouldnt be) ill be getting a GTS sometime next year...

An E6300 is a cheap upgrade and will run much cooler than your P4.

X850XT is actually faster than the 7900gs in some games for some reason.

im considering buying the E6400 in january btw, thanks for the posts.

Wouldnt bother upgrading either tbh. Wait and see that 1/4 2007 brings.
