This is more for a friend than me, I haven't played the game in years but it's pretty much the only game he plays.

I'm wondering what sort of GPU would be required to run it on max settings at 1080p? Would an AMD APU do the trick? I know it's far from the most graphically demanding of games but I have no idea where to start.

Well I'd say a 7850 could get 60 Ultra in most places but in SW with loads of people the game isn't optimised that well so you'll never get constant 60 on that game.

Go for an Nvidia card, it runs better using a card from the green team. I can run the game myself on max settings with my AMD 6870, but it's not perfect and there seems to be more FPS issues with AMD cards than Nvidia last time I checked the official WOW forums. Also if you want optimal frame rates you will probably want an Intel CPU too.

Alright thanks, now I know where to start, I played a bit of cata & I had no problem playing the game maxed out on GTS450 (obviously it wasn't stable in high pop areas but perfectly fine for BGs/Arena) how things change.

I get 30-40 fps 2560x1600 ultra setting with a 7970ghz edition and [email protected] so don't count on great performance. For this game you might want a 5ghz overclock from a 2700k or so and any graphics card. It's all down to cpu. 5ghz should get 60fps at 1080p though

SouthEastBlue pretty much nailed it, Intel/NVidia are the best combination for WoW. I used to raid and AMD GPU's tended to dip quite heavily when things got really busy.

Let me apologies to WOW fans in advance.

What a completely ridicules game that you need to run a £230 CPU at 5Ghz to get 60 FPS.

Some seriously bad coding in cheap compilers going on there, i can't believe the WOW fans put up with that.

It's a huge game that dates back to 2005 release, the serious coding started in 2003. They have updated it a bit but the core is still the same, I doubt it would be worth the investment to completely rewrite the core engine.

And tbf outside of the towns you should be able to get 60fps on mid range cpu/gpu system at high graphic settings.

I have raided in pandaria on an i3-2310M HD3000 laptop at 1080P, it was painful, but just about worked. :P (I don't recommend this)

Indeed, it's a very old engine that has been upgraded numerous times there are bound to be inefficiencies, I think they've done well to just to make it look as good as it does today.

You don't need 5ghz for 1080P though (you probably do need XFire/SLI for ultra detail), bemaniac's problems might be 7970 related because as I said ATi/AMD have always tended to get bogged down more easily in WoW than NVidia cards.

WoW does seem to prefere Nvidia cards but should be fine with either ATI or Nvidia, I believe its more cpu intensive and one of the best upgrades you could do is get a SSD as the speed increase for loading textures and zones is very noticable and does help add a few fps.

cpu is more important than gpu in wow. i5-2500k + ssd + 6950 it flies. 60fps everywhere (except intense raids), thats in high detail not ultra, ultra does lag it.
