Graphics problem (only one display)

Hi all,

Got a bit of a weird gfx problem at the moment. I've got an ATI 4870 connected to a Dell widescreen and to my Samsung via the hmdi dongle. Everything up until now has been working great for ages.

After using the PC earlier for games, I left it rebooting and came back after a while. The screen had gone into standby which normally happens after 20 mins or so. The odd thing is that I couldn't get it out of (what I thought was standby) by moving the mouse or pressing a key. I switched the system off and on again and all looked normal, until it was about to display the desktop and the screen went off again.

The second screen (TV) is still working fine. Checked all connections (inc swapping over the DVI ports & cables) and removed drivers, ran the driver cleaner in safe mode and reinstalled and still same problem. The display did come on after the drivers were removed but stopped working again on a normal boot after installation.

Looks like driver or Windows problem as it comes on fine during boot on both screens. When changing the connection type on the Dell monitor, it switches from analogue to digital automatically so it can 'see' a connection there but goes into sleep mode still.

Any ideas?

Removed SP2 beta (Vista 64) and no joy. Removed drivers and installed the previous version 8.11 and still no joy.

Well narrowed it down to it being either the DVI cable or the DVI connection on the monitor. I used my parents VGA cable (with DVI adapter on the end) and it worked fine. Also their monitor on mine with that also works ok.

Their monitors don't take DVI itself so not sure yet if it is the cable or the monitor itself yet. Ordered a replacement DVI cable, so fingers crossed.
