Hi guys, hoping for some advice for an upgrade preferably ordering for this Thursday(31/10)

Gaming at 2560 x 1440

My current system is :

i7 3820 3.8Ghz
main gaming resolution is 2560 x 1440750W XFX PSU
2GB 6950 cf

I need to replace the 6950's as they cant cut it at this resolution with many of the games i play not being near the 60fps i consider minimum

Budget is £460

please help me decide on an upgrade.

you can do HD7950 crossfire for about £320 after you sell the games.

or HD7970 crossfire for about £370 after you sell the games.

Any ideas how a 7970 stands up to a r9 290 with current expected stats , I really cant wait for tomorrow :/ , I get paid on Sunday so will be buying around then, just not sure if it would be better to go for a 290 now and get another later on compared to buying a eol card , are there any Nvidia cards that come close to the 7970 x2 ?

The 290X is going to be about 40% faster than a 7970 , and 290 about 30% faster (as a guess based on stream processors and my obsession with the rumours)

Well now the 290x has been released I seem to have even more choices, my resolution is now 2560x1440 after upgrading to the 27" Asus and am unfortunately still far away from making a final decision . My 6950's in Crossfire really don't cut it in games at this resolution with fps generally mid 30's I understand the 7990 is great value but would 2 r9 280's/7970 in cf not beat it. The only thing that is really putting me off the 290x is the heat and noise of the cooler as i don't have water cooling .

Any advice on which of the many paths to take would be appreciated.
