right i get my new rig at the beginning of January and it as follows

amd athlon 3700+
asus a8n (a premium i forget the rest) (oh its sli)
2gb of geil
460watt akasa paxpower
7600gt

right - before anyone says - I'm getting it all 2nd hand at an amazing price - so no i cant 'go conroe' so please i beg you just don't say it lol

whats the best upgrade path to take.. Ive already decided graphics will be place to start - don't see any point in putting more money into the cpu/mobo/ram might as well save for conroe in a few months time or whatever

so whats the cheapest and cheerful way to get that up? i was thinking get another 7600GT and sli em - i now sli isn't great but then it would mean only having to put another £90 onto graphics - what would total performance be?

i don't know how much money i will have to put into a totally new graphics card but could someone recommend me the best card for performance at each of these prices

£200 ish
£250 ish
£300 ish
£300+ (only a tiny bit over) ish

thanks peoples

alec

x1950 XT 256mb for £170 id go for, or 8800 GTS for about £300, but not sure how much of a bottleneck your CPU would be for that, maybe ok for the GTS in which case id go for that. :)

Tricky situation, Radeon X1950XT 256MB if I had to pick. It's an affordable price, and it's a very good card for what you pay for. However the new ATi DirectX 10 cards will be out by the end of January apparantly and Nvidia are releasing new chips around then for their graphics cards from what I've heard, so spending loads of money just doesn't seem worth it. You *could* SLi with the 7600 GT and just spend, as you say, around £90, but some games do have issues with SLi and it sucks more power and creates more heat - however getting a X1950XT uses less power, is better performance wise, creates less heat and has better compatability. I personally wouldn't spend more than that though this close to the new ATI cards.

yeah - i wouldnt be buying until febuary i imagine - so should see the new cards - any ideas if there are gonna be any midrange ones that are around the £150-£200 mark?

Could well be, although can't say for sure. I'd hope so at least, I can't imagine Nvidia and ATi thinking everyone needs to spend £300+ to switch from DX9 cards to DX10.

Guys, after some thinking and looking at finance, ive decided to get a kinda midrange nvidia card thats slightly better than 7600GT then in a few months when i got a bit more money (And my widescreen) to get a second and SLI them, although i would much prefer a one card solution i dont think i can afford it to be honest.. what would be best value for money do you think? been looking at 7800GTX's and there going cheap if you look in the right place, was maybe thinking get one of those then a second in late spring sorta time, what'ya think?

Hey alllec, thats jimmys current rig isnt it? lol

How much are 7800GTX's going for? Because they look pretty good.

Bur for sub 200, just like you reccomended me, An X1950XT would last quite a while. Some other suggestions:

7900GS
X1950pro
7950GT
X1950XTX is going for £234 now which is a good price.

a 7900GS in Sli gets around 97fps in quake 4 at 1600x1200 with AA and AF so thats pretty good.

Anyway, good luck mate :)

yeah it is mate :)

reason i kinda wanna do sli, is becuase it means its like "staggerd" eg, £150 at first, then after a few more months another £150 or something

7800GTX are actualy rather old cards but still perform pretty nice considering - they can be had for around £110 each if you look hard enough ;)

£234 for an x1950 XTX is a terrible price, especially when you can get the new gen GTS for a little more, i wouldn't touch the x1950 XTX's at those prices now.
