Graphics upgrade?

I keep reading about the 480 'din'. Noise seems an issue.

Noise isn't an issue on my 280 though, so I'd like to try and work out how noisy the 480 is relative to my 280..

Same noise as a 280 under load according to techpowerup

Is the 6950 not worth a look in, seeing as they apprently unlock to 6970. I'd have thought they are similar spec'ed to the 480 and at a similar price, but the extra ram will surely help up at 1920x1200 or similar.

Just worried about heat and whether my psu is up to the job.

they do throw an epic amount of heat off, i couldn't wait to get mine under water, if you buy one i really, really wouldn't leave it on the stock cooler.

Theres a lot of choice out there at the moment and more to come but I would only upgrade if you're going 1080p otherwise it seems a bit pointless at 1680 as your current card is more than up to the job and its not as if its being bottlenecked

Yea, but while GTX480 is around same speed as 6970 2GB at stock, the bigger overclock on the GTX480 will have greater impact on the frame rate than the slightly more VRAM on the 6970 2GB at 1920 res. But the GTX480 would have slightly higher power consumption than the 6950 2GB unclocked to 6970 2GB, but it is still about £15 cheaper than the cheapest 6950 2GB.

Crazy going with a £200 1GB 560 when you can get a 480 1.5GB for less than £200.

Hopelessly simplistic assertion

For many, the temperature, power consumption and particularly noise levels are a major concern and, in these areas, the 560 knocks the 480 into a cocked hat.

So they are similarly matched really, then? The 5970 gets you more v-ram, but the 480 will offer potentially higher frame rates with overclocking.

I guess an important factor would be how the 5950->5970 compares in terms of noise, heat and power consumption to the 480.

Torn between the 480 and the 560 Ti SOC now.

FWIW, I'm sticking with my pre-order for the latter, but then it appears noise is more of an issue for me than it is for you so you have a tougher choice :)
