Graphics upgrade

Evening guys, I'm stupidly thinking about upgrading my Windforce GHz 780Ti to one of the latest 980Ti's however I was wondering if you guys could clear some questions I have.

The reason why I was thinking about upgrading is because the windforce cooler is heating up my CPU due to the way the cooler works it just dumps it out in the case which would be great if I had loads of fans but I have a 360 Rad at the top and the 240 Rad at the front of the case so as you can imagine the CPU temperatures raise about 5-10 than normal load temperatures because of the GPU dumping all of the heat in the case. Which isn't a problem currently as the 5960X is only running at 3.5Ghz however when I come to overclock it I'd rather the CPU temperatures stayed as low as possible.

So my question is to get an AIO 980Ti or something like a windforce which raises another question even though a AIO 980Ti might be cooler than say a reference card they still produce the same amount of heat correct as in outside of the case?

If someone could put me in the right trial of thought that would be great and I also welcome opinions whether 780ti to 980Ti is worth it?

Well you have two rads, one 360 and one 240. What the hell do you needs lots that rad spac for if not gpu AND CPU?

I'd suggest adding the gpu to the loop and be gone with heat issues.

I bought the system from somebody without a GPU so I have no idea how to add a GPU into a loop and would want somebody that knew what they were doing near me just incase :P

Sorry man, but I haven't thought about it because I switched from 2 x eVGA 980 ACX2.0's in SLI to 1 G1 and haven't noticed any difference in my case/cpu temps.

Personally I don't think you'd have any problems, BUT if you want to play it safe then get an AiO based card or even a reference one. I almost went with an AiO card my self tbh, get the best of both worlds with low temps AND most of the heat being expelled outside of the case

PS - WC always scared the **** out of me tbh, with the risk of leaks/maintenance and all. CLC's ain't too bad and give a benefit over just air :D

The G1 does seem amazing 30% overclock and still the temperatures don't exceed 60 degrees which is crazy I just have to figure out whether I can get through this upgrade itch as I dont need a new GPU just wanted to get rid of my noisy 780ti for a silent card :)

Would you recommend the G1 from two 980s I wonder how much a performance increase it would be for me

Mine hit about 72c BUT I am running on stock fan profile and overvolted a bit :)

I can live with it :D

If only there was a regular water cooler near where I live so I could ask for their advise about possibly putting a block on my 780ti for near silent gaming I think that's probably my best bet as I don't want to spend £600 on a 50% increase really :(

What'd you think

Water cooling is scary in thought but it's so easy! I never had any problems with mine, no leaks, nothing. Just looked ugly so I took it out. Stick a block on that 780Ti :p you've got more than enough rad space, get another 780Ti and stick them both in at once :D

It's not a 50% increase and nowhere near that, it's 24%-30% faster is a 980Ti compared to a 780Ti depending on your resolution (Both on stock clocks, remember 780Ti and 980Ti both overclock well, so don't compare Overclocked cards to Stock cards).

People keep telling people with dual 780Ti's to get a single 980Ti and it will be as fast or faster... 780Ti Sli is way faster. But anyways I love reading the recommendations from certain users on here and some of the best ones were when the 980's came out and again people were saying to replace 780Ti's with 980's because they are way faster  and reality is it is at best 10% faster on games not gimped by Nvidia game works and when gimped 20% because of course Nvidia has to try milk every user with $$$ to blow.

What resolution are you playing on mate ? if you are on 1080p,1200p,1440p keep the 780Ti and wait for Pascal, if you are going up from 1440p yes a 980Ti maybe worth it for now or even getting a 2nd 780Ti for another £200 would probably be a better deal than £400 extra to spend after you sell your 780Ti. Also the driver gimping of the Kepler series by Nvidia has been blown out of proportion by many, reality is it's not driver gimping in some cases but games are gimping Kepler by adding a lot of tessellation that is not needed or even seen in most cases.

It really is up to you, but anyone with a 780Ti,970,980 is crazy to sell them now and not wait for Pascal if they are gaming on 1080p,1200p,1440p.

Also ask yourself why are so many people selling their 980Ti's and Titan X's so soon ;), because they have realised real world use from a 780Ti or 980 or 970 is not what they expected and not worth the extra cost they spent, 24%-30% boost in real world use is not here or there on most modern titles, it can be anything from 1-10 frames more on demanding games, yes it may knock you up to 60fps for some games (the magic number most of us want) but is it worth it when new Pascal and no more 28nm cards coming soon ? I don't want to invest more into 28nm it's way past it's sell by date.

If you were coming from anything below a regular 780 I would have said grab a 980Ti, they are great cards but not if you are coming from a great card too, the overall jump in performance is not that great. If you said to me I am running a resolution above 1440p or adding 2 more screens at 1440p (Total 3 screens) or going 4k or 5k single screen then I would say go for it and start saving up for the second card for SLI before you add the extra screens or the 4k or 5k single screen. Just remember if you are planning on going SLI get a reference card now and add another in the future also they are easier to water cool as blocks are easier to get for reference cards if you plan on water cooling them too in the future.

Thanks for all of your inputs, I really do want to put a block on my 780ti but I think my card has a non reference PCB so finding a block might be quite hard? Also I would have absolutely no idea how to drain the system and how to start it again being completely honest I need to find a kind enough fella to help me who lives near ;)

Yeah I'm gaming between 1440p and 1080p due to some fast pace games needing my 1080p 240hz monitor and the 1440p for other titles that aren't fast paced.

If I knew what I was doing I'd get two blocks, drain the system and put two 780ti's in however I'm completely clueless to how to do this.

Watercooling is scary in the way that building your first PC is scary. The first time is hard and you think that everything is going to go wrong but once it works then you get that confidence and all the rules go out the window.

After I got some help choosing parts, I found building a WC loop super easy. I had zero experience too, not even touched a CLC. Put blocks on hot things, put fittings on things, put tubes between fittings, put paper towel everywhere, fill and you are done.

Where abouts are you - there might be someone around to help.

I'm on the south east coast near Frinton.

If there was someone willing to help me that would be so great, they'd obviously be an incentive also ;)

Here ya go,

This one shows you how to put blocks on - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gH56QCUpqIM

And this one shows you how to get it all back up and running - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BgBPayV3yDo#t=248

I don't think so, everyone starts somewhere. I never had any help or experience.

The worst thing i can think that'll happen is that you'll have a leak, then you just tighten up where ever the leak is :)

Cheers for that Sam, tempted to do it myself soon as I have the case for it
