Graphics Vs Game play...

After the recent release of graphics demanding games I have still found myself going back to the classics, mainly css. I am not sure about the rest of the world but I would much prefer if they put all their energy into a decent playing game with simple graphics than these mostly unplayable hyped up games.

Surely someone should be able to create a game much like ccs but with realistic hit points and movement. Example, if you are hit in the leg it limits your walking, or your hit in the arm, so you can just use a pistol or wobbly firing a rifle one handed.

It wouldnt have to have fantastic graphics and would make one hell of a FPS.

But unfortunately we live in a superficial world.

Just my humble point of view. :D

I'm confused.

Did you just attempt to sing the praises of gameplay, whilst also bigging up CS:S?

As for a game that reacts to where you get shot, most do to an extent. CS 1.6/CS:S have the neck shot camera tilt jobby which I think is a really nice touch. Anything more than that like as you say a shot to the arm giving a wobbly arm would be alright, but only in single player games where that sort of thing exists anyway (MGS:3 Snake Eater). In multi player, games that are *that* realistic don't go down well.

I see where you're coming from, and I'm on your side to an extent - I'd love to see devs pushing the bar a little more, throwing in some original ideas.

I wonder how your idea above would affect playability, that is, would that actually be fun to play? It would be great to see it in computer controlled avatars, but maybe not players.

I tend to find the best gameplay tends to lend itself to utterly unrealistic elements. Bullet time, mavity guns, portal guns, jedi mind forces and super dooper martial arts skills come to mind when i think of the best games i've played. The only good realistic game i can think of is operation flashpoint, why is it so rare for a realistic game to be fun? Because real life isn't fun, that's why we resort to games for entertainment.

Graphics aren't as important as gameplay when it comes to making a REALLY good game. However they do help immerse you in the game - i wouldn't be one to turn down a remake of FFVII, just exactly the same but with much better graphics, it does tend to improve the experience.

I agree with you. This isn't to say I don't love some of the incredible graphics offered in games nowadays - it's just a different kind of enjoyment though, I feel.

Taking things back even further - I kinda miss the linearity of some games. It sounds strange but sometimes the open-endedness of some games almost makes me lose interest. I know this is what most developers are trying to aim for but the nostalgia in me occasionally lusts for... I dunno, a sidescrolling 2D game? :)

I am not a big fan of side scrolling games, but I would love to bring back 2d painted/3d games like Baldur’s Gate 2. This would be great at widescreen high resolutions. These old games can be more artistic and creative than newer games with their fancy 3d engines. Apart from the deep complex gameplay these games also put allot of emphasis on the story.

I agree with most comments on this except CS: S being the grade of a good shooter. Each to their own of course but I find CS: S ok in small doses. Give me good gameplay and a good story anytime rather than the clinical eye candy of the big buck games. There has been many many good games that haven't been best sellers simply because they offer that fun factor in comparison to ohter bigger budget games

Bring Back games like the original Deus Ex before it got destroyed by the sequal

Indeed. It even had stuff like this:

I think part of the problem is that people complaining about the lack of gameplay relative to graphics are only looking at the mainstream, much-hyped titles (which almost by definition will tend to be the flashiest looking).

I still maintain that there's plenty of quality games out there if you look hard enough.

I get annoyed at bad graphics now days in something which is serious. However something like theme park hospital, dungeon keeper 2 etc they dont need graphics they are writen so well. A shooter like rainbow six i think benefits from the graphics to help make you feel like your really there. Could you feel like your there in the action if they all had square heads?

I say bring back dungen keeper and ill play that for ever lol. Then again, they probably wouldn't due to such huge preasure. Dungeon keeper was something new, i dont see how they could do something so great again really.

If you were to create a game which actually has realistic movement then getting shot in the leg wouldn't cause you to slow down, it would cause you to drop to the ground clutching your leg in agony.

Creating a proper realistic game would suck imo, I'd much rather play games where it takes 5 shots to kill someone rather than 1.

The game you describe already exists. Play Americas Army or Red Orchestra. :)

Both rainbow 6 and rogue spear had pretty crap graphics when they were released, but they were still 2 of the best games ever... its only since they prettied the games up for the consoles in the last couple of games that the game has gone to ****

Couldn't agree more just started playing on Raven Shield again and in terms of realism and teamwork with other players it just obliterates CSS and the like. Top top game, just a shame I didn't start to play it earlier because I thought that the community would have died. Seems I was very wrong.

the only game i would say came close to perfect in terms of gameplay and graphics in one package was Tribes 2 .

sure, it wasn't a pick up and play game for the casual player, you had to be dedicated, it was a game that rewarded you for the time you put into it . I loved the BF series and CS but this game started it all(tribes - starsiege), with many of its innovations creeping into other games.

graphically it was superb, combining massive open terrain with underground paths . The vehicles were also superb, Shrikes for ariel combat and bombers, with tanks and bikes for ground battles.

add to this user customization of character and vehicle skins meant clans could have unique designs. The community was superb working together to make maps enhanced modes like classic or cluster for ctf.

in all, it wasn't about flashy this and that, or what your gfx card could throw about on the screen, it was about true gameplay with perfect balance ... roll on Legions !!!

IMO so long as the game feels 'solid' and you can easily tell whats going on then that's all you need. Not that pretty graphics arn't nice but gameplay is where it's at for me :)
