Graphics woes

I've got a machine I'm trying to set up for my mum for christmas (her laptop is almost dead) but I'm completely stuffed trying to get the graphics working.

I've got an onboard GPU (nForce 610i) and I'm attempting to use it with Ubuntu 8.10 but it simply will not work.

It loads up fine and the log in screen is displayed at the correct resolution (1440x900 on a 19" WS) but when I log in I get a black screen with "Out of Range" displayed.

I've tried re-installing the drives, re-setting the Xserver, changing the resolution in xorg.conf... pretty much everything that google has told me will work.

I'm either stuck with "Out of Range" or 800x600 which is pretty useless when I paid for a 19" monitor :(

This is my first time using anything other than Windows so I might be missing something obvious so I'd love it if someone could give me a solution that won't involve me buying a new copy of windows or a new GPU.

Had this problem with my monitor for some reason before now. I had to plug it into the D-sub till i loaded the restricted driver and then when i rebooted with the proper driver i switched to DVi.

Maybe??

Neither the monitor nor the motherboard have DVI connectors so that won't work either :(
