Hi all, i know fan lubrication has been covererd here previously.

But i've read in length on another forum that light oil and graphite powder works wonders. Everyone who tried this suggestion reported back that it was brilliant in curing fan noise and reviving performance.

Anyone agree? Cos i can't seem to find any graphite powder in local stores. Even google doesn't help me out much.

I need to revive a laptop cpu fan and the manufacturers want £28 + vat for a new one!!

Advice appreciated, thanks! :)

edit: i've found some 'white spray grease' and some 'silicon grease with PTFE'. Any good??

Graphite powder? Break up the inside of a pencil?

As daft as your suggestions sounds.............. i did actually try using a scalpel to scrape some graphite from a pencil into the fan, lol.

Think it would need to be very fine powder tbh.

Mortar and pestle (improvise) would make it very fine. Mix with some oil in the pestle and then smear some on the fans ball bearing.

Stand well back. :p

3-in-one used to make a graphited oil which was marketed as "penetrating and easing" oil. Not sure if it is still available though.

It was certainly the best thing for freeing up seized and rusty bolts. If it is still available it would probably work really well in a noisy fan.
