Hi after some advice from this site i have decided to buy a GTX 460 though with the price of a GTX 470 i may be tempted for that. I presently have a 8800 GT are either of these cards bigger than that i have a coolermaster case but not sure which model so just want to make sure it fits before i buy? i also have a corsair 650 psu will this be powerful enough for either of these cards and does it have enough connectors, as i believe i need 2 power cables for these cards. Is the GTX 470 overkill for a Q6600?

Can't really tell if it would fit since you don't know which coolermaster case it is. Try to see if you can measure how much space you have within your case.
The PSU is enough, and it should have enough connections.
What speed is the Q6600 running at?

its running at stock it was supposed to be o/ced when i bought it to 3.0ghz but I'm not sure if i did something in the BIOS to it when i had a problem with it a while ago. i'm just not very comfortable with overclocking as i've never done it before. i was wondering if it was longer than a 8800gt as i have about an inch behind the card.

Get some measuring tape, and go measure it :p
If it's running at stock then it will hold the 470 back. A 460 should fit and be the better value card.
