No!!! not what your thinking.

I rent my house and the garden is not very big. The previous tennant made some sort of flower bed and used some of them plastic grass edge things that you put in the soil? anyway I am not a big flower dude. and its just wasted space as all it produces is weeds. there is a dying plant / bush in it which i have no idea why its dying.

So the area is very weedy.. and would need leveling a little. I want to make the area grass so that it can be used and looks better.

how would I go about it? buying rolls of grass or laying seed. What prep would I need to do please?

Many thanks

Ross

You could seed it and this would definitely be the cheapest option, the only problem with that I can see is if there are a multitude of rooted weeds there already. These will grow quicker than the grass would and cause problems for you down the line. I'd either recommend you to dig the area out properly and grab all the bulbs and roots you can before seeding or to go the more expensive route and buy a couple of rolls of turf. Personally though I would dig the area out, place a basic pre-made border, re-soil and sow a few packets of wildflower seeds on the area. That way you have a very basic garden feature and you don't have to maintain it, it should even look pretty good during next spring/summer.

Hope that helps!

Personally i would just did out the area with a fork trying to remove all the old roots, level the soil and buy some seed.
Or there is a turf suppliers in Tilsworth, only a couple of miles away from LB, u can pick up rolls of turf for around £2 each.
Site here http://www.everfarmturf.co.uk/
or if u go down Ivinghoe way, there is also a turf suppliers there or even try B&Q.

if you want to be sure of clearing the weeds without too much digging, i recommend using roundup (be careful not to get any on the good grass) and this will kill everything with 10 days or so. Once thats done, get some seed from B&Q and give the soil a mix, sprinkle the seed, add some compost over the top and keep well watered.
Total time will be a month or so, but the results will be good!
