Gratuitous space battles - enemy health?

This is part of the latest humble bundle but I cant see a way to view enemy health or your health easily? You get stats such as -14 per hit when you fire on ships, but that means nothing when I have no idea how much health in numbers your enemy have or how much hull strength your ship has!

Am I missing something, or is there no way to see enemy ships hull and shield strength?

I've been wondering this myself. Other than while you're actually building your own ship I don't see a way it's possible...

Have to say I was looking forward to controlling the battles, I was disappointed to set it all up just to have to sit and watch.

Off the top of my head, no I don't think there was. You just have to use the fires to gauge how much damage you've inflicted and the more you play the more you'll get used to it.
