That's not a bad idea to be fair.

For a long time I have wanted to be cremated. By a plaque left, with a solar powered screen showing a blue screen of death with a techyfied description of how I died.

Is that sarchasm or do you actually not know? Its a kind of barcode that you can scan with your phone that will usually link you to a web page

It's not sarchasm (sic). My phone cost me less than a tenner in the philippines.

Anyway, in that case why is it better than a simple URL encarved?

Ease of use, it's literally a case of wave your camera phone at the code and you're there. Much more convenient than typing stuff in and better geared towards a spur of the moment decision to check something out. It essentially cuts down on faff.

Because you don't need to type the address in, you scan it and it converts it and loads automatically. They are also much more aesthetically pleasing to look at than a text URL.

Brilliant idea. I'm all for the information age and this is a great example. You can turn a stone with a name on into a person, knowing who they are, what they did etc. Even photos etc.

How will they pay the domain/hosting fee's for their website link?

Or, assuming it's not privately run by the deceased (!) then who gets to decide the available information and how it is delivered?
