Hi people,
We looking to buy our first property soon and we have been looking at some propertys based in Grays essex around the 100k mark for a 2 bedroom place. However, does anyone know of this area.......? I tried doing some research on this place but i cant seem to find much unlike my research project for west thamesmead lol.

Anyway, i will be commuting to london from this place so if anyone on this forums does live around this area then please post your views :)

yeah grays is great, it's got tonnes of....

well it's got really loads of.....

ok it's crap, grays aint too good. I live in tilbury which used to be worse, but i think even tilbury out does grays now.

there's a nice new beach in grays...if you like broken glass and needles.

and the main road through grays is 99% estate agents. it even has 2 shopping malls, one aint too bad, the other one was supposed to be great it's just an empty shell coz no shops wanted to move in in there.

There's also an influx of "foreign" shops, like afro caribean foods etc. Whilst these are great for diversity, there was one that a while ago displayed a sign in the window with "No Whites" on, was shocked to say the least.

with the negatives out of the way, it's not the worst place i've been (I drive through it every day on my way to work). the market is ok, the main shopping centre is ok (Wilkinsons, 99p stores, iceland, peacocks, QD jewellers etc), theres a morrisons in the town centre, and a train station right in the centre too.
I think grays' best feature is it right next to West Thurrock (Lakeside Shopping Centre). It's also next to the QE2 Bridge.

also there are a few quieter areas basically the further you go away from the town centre the better you are.

so to sum up it's not all bad, but you could maybe find better.

hope i haven't put you off moving to grays :O)

And I am sure you have photos to prove this.

no, they've been told by the police to take them down after, as you can imagine, quite a number of complaints. It's just shocking that this kind of mentality still exists. I could understand it on a hair dressers for example, maybe a hair dresser who specializes in "afro" hair cuts etc so this would be fine, but in the window of a food shop?

So how do you know about them? Was this ever documented by any local news media? It sounds like the sort of thing that could hardly go unnoticed. Surely it would have been widely reported.

Really? So you've never heard of the BNP, then?

Disgraceful indeed - if true.

I did see it myself after being told about it by someone else, I just had to go and check to see if it was true. obviously i have no proof to offer you so i'm not asking you to believe me out right or anything. but it's just made me wary and now not so happy to try out some of these new shops. and thats the most disappointing bit, i love trying out new shops that i haven't been in, trying strange new foods etc.

Wow surprised by some of the comments in here. Grays like all places has its good and bad areas, some areas are a little run down but others are actually rather nice with some lovely quiet roads with large (and expensive) houses.

Myself I'm in Chafford Hundred and whilst it is addressed under Grays it really is a separate area (and its HUGE!), the whole of it being no older than 20 years with the last builds only finishing a couple of years ago. Chafford Hundreds is your typical new build development, lots of houses from small flats to large(ish) detected homes (new builds so never going to get massive places), area is very clean (Thurrock Council do look after their streets) and plenty of amenities and good transport links.

I’m 20mins walk from both Grays and Chafford Hundred stations so getting into London is no problem at all, if you drive you can get on the A13/M25 with ease (although traffic can suck in the morning).

Can’t speak for inner Grays but crime in Chafford Hundred is low and the local police said it’s mainly the odd break-in they have to deal with, other than that it’s keeping an eye on the local kids.

Shopping etc, yes you have Lakeside and the retail park so never a problem getting anything, also close enough to pop to Bluewater or up into town if preferred.

Best advice would pop over and make your own decision on the area.

I personally though the place is a dump. However, i dont live there i only drive through it now and again.

I work in Moorgate, i think a monthly travel card is £269.20 :(
That sounds high, a Zone one return is £9.30 so even if you paid daily (4 weeks * 5 days) that would only come in at £186.

I travel to Zone two at £8.40 (used to be only £6.20 until recently) but don't bother with weekly/monthlys as I don't use the train every day so works out no cheaper.
