Howdy :)

I managed to bag a b-grade Dell Inspiron 1520 the other day.
Decent enough spec - 2Ghz c2d, 2GB, 8600mGT etc..

I'd already read that the 8600mGT overclocked quite well, so set off to see just how high I could push it!

Default clocks are 475 on the GPU, and 400 on the GDDR2.

I used nTune to monitor temps, ATItool to check for artifacts, and rivatuner to increase the clocks.. and got some pretty nice results :p

After benching 3dmark06 on a loop, the GPU peaked at a cool 67C

The results:

Now, I can max out Bioshock without any chug whatsoever, and I can add AA on to most newer titles. Switching between stock and OC clocks is easy:

I know the 8600mGT isn't exactly high end, but I paid peanuts for this laptop, and now it'll play every game I throw at it (bar crysis ;)) without compromising on IQ. Get OC'ing your laptop's graphics!

Nice one mate I also have a 8600mGT in my XPS M1530 it really is a great mobile GPU. I haven't tried OCing yet as I haven't had the need but its great to see it is also a good overclocker!

Nice one!

i wouldnt overclock too much, you might bork your gfx card if you have crap cooling with the 8600m and other g84/g82 based cards due to the nvidia defects.

but great overclock nevertheless!

A note of caution, have you guys read the recent news about the defective gpu chips? IIRC they include the 8600M GT (I have one in my Vostro 1700).. overclocking might push the failure rate a little higher? Just a word in case you hadn't heard - there's a few mentions in the Laptop forums I think, could be worth a read if you don't want to knacker your lappy :)

Excellent overclock though, tempted to give mine a quick push to see what it can do!

I have a 8600m GT in my Macbook Pro. If I clocked it to those speeds I am pretty sure the bugger would go critical and burn a hole to the centre of the earth. The machine gets hot enough even with Apples underclocked speeds.

thats shockingly cool for a laptop gpu. how hot does it get when you run furmark? and have you done any cooling mods to it? the guys who complain about lappy gpu failures say that thier gpu constantly hits 95c in temps.

are you using a bios that has the fan kick in earlier or faster?

Stock bios.. tbh, I haven't actually heard the fan yet! Tho, my last lappy was a 2.8 P4 that idled at 754735743C ;)

I've uninstalled the benchmark apps now, but ATItool reached the same 67C peak :)

Very nice results there, are you able to push the memory any higher, as I seem to remember from some other reviews the memory being able to go higher?

nope :/

I don't notice any artifacts in-game with higher ram clocks, but atitool artifacts straight away with 10mhz more.

most people get ~480 - 500, so my 520mhz clock is pretty good :)

It's my GPU clock I was most impressed with.. 40% more performance for free
