Jeremy Hunt today announced that Nuclear Energy will be considered a green energy source.

This will make it easier/cheaper/more lucrative to invest in nuclear energy in the UK, resulting in better uptake and investment in the technology.

This is, in my opinion, an excellent thing. A few important things to note:

  • It is NOT replacing sustainable sources such as solar and wind
  • Target of 25% of energy production by 2050
  • Competitions for small-scale reactors to go live soon

Sustainable energy sources are excellent, and are getting increasingly cheap & efficient. However, they are not entirely compatible with our energy use demands. Hence, we need to find a balance and supplement it with other energy sources.

At the moment, we're using coal and gas.

Nuclear energy has a considerably higher safety record compared to coal and gas. In fact, based on data available, it's the safest energy source in the world, in terms of deaths per TWh.

Having an abundance of cleaner energy will open up doors to many other things too, including hydrogen-powered vehicles.

What are your thoughts on nuclear energy? Are you excited to have extra limbs? Do you prefer climate change?

I think it is a must in the short term, provided efforts for other renewables isn't forgotten about.

Nuclear is far from ideal as a forever power source, the waste needs to go somewhere, and lasts for a really really long time, and our children's children's children etc etc will have to live with that. Plus as from a defence perspective far from ideal as they would make a good target.

But absolutely short term whilst technology for storage etc catches up it seems like a no brainer.

Well it's about time. But after the ******** known as HS2, I don't hold much confidence that this won't end up nearly 10x over budget, late and some how smaller in scope than when it first started. (It takes a special level of incompetence to pull that trifecta off.)

I really hope they don't somehow manage to mess this up as well. This country needs some sort of a win.

Edit: Just seen you linked to Kyle Hill. Nice.

All for nuclear power, it's the best thing we have right now. All well and good waiting for something better but we need something for the foreseeable future.

Not for nuclear power at all, build a crapload of windfarms, solar and tidal pay the poor farmers as they cant build anything else unless your lord Bamford...

Shift the science into cracking fusion in the next 20-30 years. Thats nothing compared to 10000 years of half baked uranium hanging around in a rusty can in the middle of the lakes. Infact lets build the storage facility in the south downs.
