great connection on virgin 50 meg except my ping seems a bit high..

hi all, been really enjoying my 50 meg connection with the supplied d link 615 router. However, i've recently downloaded some games through steam and noticed that my ping seems a bit high, like 80ms on london servers. Will updating the firmware to a custom one make a difference with this? do i need to do many tweaks? Also, which firmware exactly do i need to get for the virgin router? thanks

Try without the router in place if it helps then a custom firmware on the router will probably help.
