Took over an hour as well........ :(

Then to cap it all this monster for the SMP client:

Nice points but running very slowly........ :(

I don't mind the little 15 pointers too much. It keeps things ticking over on boxes that aren't on 24/7.

The 5102 (and 5101s) are the crappest of the crap tho. Think I made a thread too when I got one :)

Rumor has it, there are some new 2000 series WU's comming down the pipe that are _A2 (For Higher Performance Machines) and have a Timeout / Deadline of nearly a week  That will make your SMP Quads moan a good bit :D

Points will probably be increased to compensate for added resource consumption, dont quote me on that though, ya never know ;)

I dont think anything compares to the Amber p2170 for all round awfulness - 2 full days of cpu time (on 3.3GHz quad), all for a whopping 234 points!

I just set up the linux smp client in VMware yesterday/today - nicely coincided with an EUE from the windows SMP client, so have been running that this afternoon, and its fantastic! Its getting ~2700 ppd from just 2 cores of the quad (now slightly downclocked to 3GHz), whereas the win SMP client was netting only around 1800 from 4 cores... I was expecting it to be a pain to set up, but everything went fine (VMware on the other hand... I hope they release a version of Virtualbox that can use multiple cores)!

Once you learn your way around the basic's of Linux, UB is very slick and pain free, even the updates are effortless. I'm certainly not a Linux GURU, but I can do a server install, configure wireless & samba, install 4x SMP's in about 20 minutes.

Re: VMware. We'll, it's not for everyone, but I bit the bullet and bought the Workstation Edition v6.5 I think it is. Was worth every nickle. Easy to Install (Tried it on XP & Vista, no probs), and I have aleast 10 different VM's I'm messing with. Taking a Snapshot is dead easy, then modify to one's content.

Using just the VMPlayer leaves allot on the table.

Thanks for the replys

Just got another 5102......

Oh well, it's all for the future of medicine.:)

Look forward to these new WU's, hopefully Santa will bring a Quad Core, I'm still on the old E6700.

I like VMWare, I've just got the old freebie version but it seems very reliable and easy to use. Umbungo was OK once I followed the correct installation guide, the guide on the FaH and Umbungo websites didn't work for me.

Follow this guide, it works very well !!!:

The F@H and SMP Client Guide

If you have trouble, there are loads of Linux GURU's here on OcUK that can help you out.

Don't chuck out the E6700's, they do well on SMP. My stock E6600's get ~ 2.2k per day, they just plot along nicely.

Configuring samba was by far the most difficult bit! Ive messed around with linux recently, and have a fairly good experience of ubuntu (except asus soundcard drivers - compiling from source anyone?) - dont know why, just expected it to be a bit more of a hassle than it was.

Im not too impressed with VMware server 2 - granted its free and once the thing is set up its easy enough to make a shortcut and run the machine from there, but i found the whole faffing around in internet explorer a bit of a pain. Installing VMware tools is also unecessarily complicated (not helped by the fact it is not supported in Ubuntu 8.10 - should have looked for that first!). Im sure the professional paid for version is a lot better - lots of people recommend it, but i found virtualbox (free!) is quite a bit slicker and easier to use (although does not have multiple core support). Heres hoping they correct that soon enough! Out of interest, how much is a proper license?

I got the instructions for Samba from the Ubuntu site, that seemed to go quite well, all this command line stuff reminds me of the good old days, I still have MSDOS floppies...........

My VMWare is version 1.0.3 and very easy to set, I haven't installed the tools, can't think of a use for them.

VMWare Workstation 6.5 is $189 according to their website.

Incidentally, 2,200 ppd with an E6600, what sort of settings, software, hardware etc?

Cheers in advance.:)
