[Probably] In no particular order, I'd like to suggest the following:

1. Diego Maradona 1986 WCQF vs England - his first goal, for obvious reasons.

2. Gabriel Batistuta - c.1997, for Fiorentina vs Parma I think - cross from the tright hand side, Batigol took it full flight on the chest, and nudged it into his stride, before half volleying a thunderbolt from 30 yards past the 'keeper. Pure technical brilliance.

3. Carlos Alberto, 1970 WCF, Brazil vs Italy...after a flowing move up and down and back up the pitch, Pele rolls the ball into the path of the on-rushing right back who catches the ball just as it bobbles slightly, and lashes it into the bottom corner. Teamwork, samba brilliance, awesome execution.

Bernard - Van Basten of course from the most acute angle - and although it was sensational, it was a single shot, I like a little more substance to my goals.

Van Basten was, however, the dream striker when I was growing up - still have my Didadora Van Basten boots in the garage, size 6.

Or utters the words "Wayne" and "Rooney"

Bernard - by the way, would you consider David Platt's injury time swivel volley against Belgium as a "great"?

As a Villa fan, as as Platty was still with us at the time, I would say yes, albeit sentimentaly

The one vs Newcastle, IMO, was a tad fortunate, I believe he simply reacted quicker after the ball spun off his boot - call me cynical.

Anyway, it is instantly disqualified as he was being marked by defensive "maestro" Nikos Dabizas at the time, rendering it unworthy!

The season AFTER the World Cup 1990, Platty stayed on, and again, IMO, was at the time, the best midfielder in the World - we stayed up JUST, but he still scored 20 goals in the League - fantastic.

Sold to Bari for £5.5m the following summer, and replaced by Big Ron's dubious purchase, midfield dynamo Paul Mortimer
