I nearly fell through the floor this morning when my Green Flag breakdown cover renewal fell through the letterbox. Price gone up from @£66 to £93 for the same level of cover despite not having called them out once in the last 12 months. Last year it went up from £55 to £66, still a hike but not such a huge one.

I rang to query why the premium had risen so much. After being passed around from one call centre operative to another I eventually got a vague reply about it being due to the car being a year older. Sheesh, it's 4 years old now not 3 and has a history of good reliability.

I told them I would not be renewing and would look at the AA and RAC but they have you over a barrel really as the two "big" organisations charge £130+ as an introductory price for the same level of cover, rising to nearly £200 in the following year.

So in the end I decided to buckle up and pay the £93 as they wouldn't budge but I still think it's an excessive price rise.

mine went up £20 to £63 (rescuemycar.com) phoned em up to tell them to not renew it and went on one of the compare sites and got it for £28 with the same place. best to shop around tbh

How about upgrading your current account? Not worth it for me, but it might be for you.

I get my RAC cover (All 3 inc home start) for £124 per year.

Looks like extending my car's manufacturer warranty gets top level AA cover included. Not something I'll have to do any time soon but at a couple of hundred, it seems OK value.

You can get £50 cashback on the top level AA / RAC policies via TopCashBack.

My AA renewal this year was £100 more than the prices shown online (new policy). One phone call and, surprise, surprise, the lady on the phone can get me the better price for my renewal...
