Greetings from Korea

Well my Knowledge of korea is completely non existant i just imagined where ever he was that internet access wouldn't be something he would have access to very often. (and by access to i mean seeking out and using)

I am merely surprised to find that someone was surprised to find that South Korea does not have a significant white population. Unlike the other places you mention, it is not multicultural and/or a popular tourist mecca.

I assumed this was common knowledge. Wrong assumption, perhaps?

Hi uhrm I wasnt saying that there was not a significant white populate I was saying that my friend and I have not spotted a single caucasian. We were only in seoul for one day and spent most of our time in smaller places but still I find this very surprising! Today a small girl came up to me and said my eyes were beautiful - she had never seen anyone with blue eyes before and didnt realise it was possible. Perhaps I should have come better prepared (knowledge wise) but i found this very surprising!

Traditional Korea food is nasty as you like - everything has masses of garlic and chilli (I can handle hot but this is garlic+chilli: other ingredients 50:50) and the quality of the meat is very low. Thats right untill you get into the bigger cities at which point it feels more 'asian in general' rather than korean. Not at all offensive but not overly authentic!

Oh as to the why am I over here question......because I have never been here before! Fairly well travelled and moving out to Australia for a few months before I start work in PwC in Bristol in Sept.

I would reccomend Korea to anyone for a cheap holiday, avoid coach tours like the plague and buy yourself a lonly planet guide. Once you realise that koreans shout everything and look like theyre going to kill you even when theyre helping you realise that theyre lovely :)

did you know Geoymg-ju was the capital of Korea for over a thousand years? It has more temples/tombs than anywhere I have ever seen!

Think I might make this a semi blog thread - ask any questions! If anyone has internet hosting that theyre willing to share I have lots of hilarious pictures :)
(email me on [email protected] if you dont want to put it in the thread).

Peace out

Mike

How cheap is a flight out to e.g. seuol? cant imagine it would be a "cheap holiday"

p.s. korean food is ok albeit a bit spicy, I like bulgogi and samgyeopsal ( sortof panfried pork belly)

Jealous. :(

I recently read a book called One Thousand Chestnut Trees which [a] really made me want to visit Korea and not want to go to Japan. Great book.

North or south?

I have heard that North Korea is a very weird place, sort of like going back in time 50 years.

The south is pretty weird. I've been out here for 7 months now and the differences never cease to amaze me.
What the hell? No caucasians AT ALL? Where are you in Korea?

And the food is simply amazing....! Seriously. Also, every teenager you see should speak English to a basic basic conversational level.

WTF? If you live in Seoul maybe. For the rest of the country the most you will here is "hello, how are you" and "I'm fine thank you, how are you?"

I love Korea!

Go down to the 7-11 RIGHT NOW and drink cheeeep cheeeeep Soju in the street until you're puking in the gutter, you cannot buy that stuff anywhere near me in the UK and I miss it soooo bad!
