It's bizarre, I noticed it when I was only out there for a week. It's because westerners are as rare as rocking horse poop, so when there is one, it's a breath of fresh air to be able to have a lengthy conversation! And I agree, Japan is pretty awesome!

People are slightly more intoverted that Korea but still very friendly and loads of people speak a little bit of english.

Awesome, that must have been Nijo castle! I love Nightingale Floors :) Don't know why, just fascinates me.

I think the caucasian nod will be good for those not incredibly confident - sorta makes them feel less alone. But if you are confident, it's just weird.
 
I went to Japan (Tokyo) Feb. last year, great place, want to go again soon and get out of Tokyo next time.

Also went to Iceland which was great (bit smaller than Japan :p )
