So, was playing Ghost of a Tale new years eve day with my lad, when all of a sudden screen went red/purple pixellated. Rebooted and 5mins later same behaviour. Reboot again, but only got a black screen. Managed to get in safe mode and noticed device manager display adaptor was MS HD7800 (not AMD). Tried to remove and update with AMD drivers (2 crimson and 1 ccc) but kept going to black screen - only the basic ms display driver works, but this has two 1 inch vertical lines.
Tried repairing Win10 OS, but same behaviour. Tried fresh reinstall of Win10, and screen goes black when ANY display driver installed (other than MS basic). Using MS basic driver allows OS to update (disabling Win10's driver updates in Device Installions settings).
Tried RX480 GPU - lights up but black screen - OS doesn't load either. 550W PSU should be enough...?
Tempted to try 1 stick of 4G RAM and 1 SSD, with either GPU, but wondering if the OS is getting mixed messages from the hardware...
GPU: HD7870 (with RX480 planned to swap)
RAM: Corsair XMS3 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MH + Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz
CPU: Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155
Mobo: MSI P67A-GD53 Intel P67 (Socket 1155) DDR3
PSU = 550W Antec True Power
Case = Zalman Z9 Plus
Top tip - don't do this after several beers!
