So, was playing Ghost of a Tale new years eve day with my lad, when all of a sudden screen went red/purple pixellated. Rebooted and 5mins later same behaviour. Reboot again, but only got a black screen. Managed to get in safe mode and noticed device manager display adaptor was MS HD7800 (not AMD). Tried to remove and update with AMD drivers (2 crimson and 1 ccc) but kept going to black screen - only the basic ms display driver works, but this has two 1 inch vertical lines.

Tried repairing Win10 OS, but same behaviour. Tried fresh reinstall of Win10, and screen goes black when ANY display driver installed (other than MS basic). Using MS basic driver allows OS to update (disabling Win10's driver updates in Device Installions settings).

Tried RX480 GPU - lights up but black screen - OS doesn't load either. 550W PSU should be enough...?

Tempted to try 1 stick of 4G RAM and 1 SSD, with either GPU, but wondering if the OS is getting mixed messages from the hardware...

GPU: HD7870 (with RX480 planned to swap)
RAM: Corsair XMS3 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MH + Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz
CPU: Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155
Mobo: MSI P67A-GD53 Intel P67 (Socket 1155) DDR3
PSU = 550W Antec True Power
Case = Zalman Z9 Plus

Top tip - don't do this after several beers! :)

Weirdly got a reply different to the above, suggesting trying DDU and sfc /scannow.

Mucked around with drivers a bit more last night with DDU, but all attempts generated the same results. Both OS checking with sfc and dism were healthy (as was chkdsk).

Memtest appearred content with RAM as well, but might try adding AMD driver manually offline.

Good idea on moving the GPU - only my OCD twitches as will have to remove the one time removable back slot covers, but needs must.

No worries, appreciate the pointers, as have little time in the evening to fiddle now.

Tried the card in the other PCIE slot (with only SSD and 4GB stick) but only showed up in 'other devices' in device manager.
Manually updated the driver in safe mode, rebooted and screen went black again after login - reverting driver back to MS basic one restored basic display.
So both PCIE slots showing similar behaviour.

Have been donated HD6750 to test as well for this evening to test.

Want to rule out the board before flashing the bios to get the RX480 running.

Just trying to get it running so my lad can play his xmas and loooming birthday games he'll no doubt get!

Seems the HD7870 is toast - put the HD6750 in and all was well.

Options now are to bake the 7870 as suggested in AMD forms:
Bake Me

Or flash the BIOS to latest beta, and get the RX480 going, following the MSI link in this OCuK thread:
MSI flash

Tempted to gamble with the latter...

The latter shouldn't be a gamble so well worth a shot, i'd do that before baking the card.

Just for total clarity sake you have tried different PSU PCI ports or ideally a different PSU?

Yeah, did try different PSU PCI ports as haven't got spare PSU (nor have my mates).

MSI boards seem to have a poor rep for flashing BIOS's - but I've got time tomorrow :)

ive got a sapphire 270x 4gb card that does exactly the same thing. ive been tempted to drop it in a on oven to see if it would work but never got round to it.

Testing a different PSU would be advisable really, after a BIOS flash. Even if you just take it over your mates and run the cables from theirs in to yours for ease. The card that works is it just PCI powered or a 6/8 pin? Might point towards the PSU if it is...

Updated the BIOS to v4.3 on Friday evening successfully - but got BOOTMGR missing as I plugged the HDD's back in. Switched drive order to SSD and all was good - RX480 behaving nicely too. :)

Still tempted to bake the 7870 ;)
