Grey Kit - Anyone got any horror stories?

Hi folks,

Was just moaning about grey kit in another threadand it made me wonder; Has anyone else ran into problems with Grey kit before? Got any juicy horror stories?

That's what I'd assume.

Never had any problems with what I've seen/used (mainly HP with a bit of Cisco). I've also used a lot of HP "white box" server components which are cheaper but once in a server still get full HP warranty. The bits are brand new but were intended for field spares.

I think Rick needs some stories to scare his customers into buying Smartnet.
Dont feed him.

A customer of ours buys grey merch from HP to ship to Africa.

It works out well because for a 500 machine deployment, they buy 600 boxes and cannibalise them as stuff breaks down. Much cheaper than a fancy 24/7 support contract out there.

I wouldn't recommend it for any proper enterprise but it certainly is cost effective.

I heard a few at work from people who were obviously biased and wanted to know what other people's experiences were. Don't sell enough Cisco to worry about smartnet anyway!
