Grim Fandango

I got this up and running on XP quite recently.. think I still have it installed actually, will have a look when I get home. I don't remember having to do much special.

Awesome game, they just don't make 'em like this any more.

Best way to get it to work is use the xp installer, it will copy most files to hdd unlike original installer.

Just so u know, the game doesnt like hyperthreading cpus so use 1 core if possible also it doesnt like cpus over 2ghz so u may need to downclock to get things working properly. When i tryed it on my pc it rebooted the computer and major lag during cinematics. Aint tryed downclockin but will when i reinstall some point later.

You have to set the games affinity for win 95. I had some trouble myself.

Go to your programs folder.

Go into Lucasarts then Grim Fandango.

Right click on the .exe select properties click on the compatability tab

Check the box in the compatability mode section and choose it to run in windows 98/ME in the drop down box.

Then click OK

That worked for me.

also, todays high speed drives spin up and slow down as data is needed, as opposed to a constant slow spin like the old drives that were around during Grims' time.

The result of this is every time the game needs to access the disk there is a pause as it spins up and then the game runs slightly faster to compensate for the pause. This is a game breaking problem as it makes a puzzle in the middle of the game unsolvable but it IS fixable. Something to do with copying essential CD files to your harddrive in the correct way. I believe the grim fandango/lucasarts? (i forget who made it) website has instructions to correct this problem. It is playable on XP, i completed it on it, it's just effort to get it running in the first place.

[EDIT] You need a patch to solve the speed up issues:

And here are the instructions on how to copy the files to your HDD, infact they're instructions on how to get the game running perfectly on windows XP.

Im playing it right now, i have a weird time playing tho as i have to play in win 95 compat mode to get the game workin properly, but the cutscenes stutter like madness, so i have to save, exit, take compatability off, go in game load up and cutscene plays nice, then save after its done and turn back compat 95 mode on and load the game and keep playing, i do this every time theres a cutscene, maybe not if its tiny cutscene but not for long ones as i wana watch em smooth and sound/voices properly. Unfotunatly u cant keep compat mode off cos sooner or later sounds disappear etc.

i had this running in vista recently with no problems, just installed the patches, and read a few things on fan forums, didnt ahve any problems with slow down or anything, i just ran it in compatability mode.

Unfortunately it's a very mixed bag of chips as to whether it will work or not.

Didnt work when i tryed running it from vista 64bit pro. Mind you i hadnt installed it when using vista i installed it when using xp pro 32bit.
