Grit lorries

What I don't get is they put the grit out when its a bit frosty, nothing too hard to negotiate, but when it does actually snow for days and permafrost forms on the roads making them undrivable they are nowhere to be seen.

Interesting BBC news article about (salt) aggregate size used on gritter lorries, it is 10mm in Oldham(or maybe it was Preston) versus 6mm typically used elsewhere,
apparently it is larger because it is windier.

Not surprising it can do some paint damage.

Remains surprising when most folks do not drive over to edge of road when one is approaching.

Everytime its a bit chilly they're out in force here never mind a frost. Last night I passed them 3 times. Today its been raining all day so thats that lot down the drains. They must be on an overtime bonus or something.

Just be glad they’re spreading small pieces of salt rather than actual pea shingle.

You’re lucky if your windscreen lasts a winter without cracks or chips here because of all the gravel on the roads all winter.
