Howdy folks - i was wondering whether anyone could tell me what the minimum ground clearance is realistically speaking if you are forced to park up on the kerb from time to time.

I have my eye on a Golf which seems to have a lower than usual (for me at least) front & rear bumper, as well as wider than usual side skirts -it has a ground clearance of approx 5.5" but i dont want to buy one if i run the risk of trashing it every time i have to park outside my house - which sometimes involves pulling up on the kerb, and dropping off it when i leave.

Any advice from anyone with something similar gratefully received!

And besides, you can get a low car up a kerb by nudging up to it with the wheels on full lock and then inching the wheel up, which lifts the body.

I cringe when I see people go flying at kerbs and then wonder why their car rattles/has dead shock absorbers/dented wheels/popped tyres etc.

I was going to reply earlier saying you would be fine but didn't bother.

Got me thinking about the time I had my old almera on chopped springs. I got stuck in the delivery bay of an asda, with my broken gearbox with no reverse gear, I had to go over a paved section.

Just so happened that its width was the same as the distance between my two wheels. I got beached and had to spin the wheels and make an arse of myself to get off :(

More to the point - why are you parking on the pavement?

Doing that round here you'd get slapped with a fine sharpish.

thanks for the advice all - sounds like the consensus is ill be fine although i guess i can ask to test-drive-park it before i buy.

I am forced to park on the kerb outside my house as it's a fairly narrow cul-de-sac.
