If you're talking about the pairing/encryption buttons on the actual adapters then you should be using them.
If you don't the adapters will use default encryption keys. Once or twice a year someone posts on here wondering why their adapters have connected to their neighbour's network. It cropped up again in the last few days.
I had to resort to using the utility when adding a third adaptor on my powerline network. I could get two to communicate using the buttons but for some reason the 3rd would never work
