How much does a graphics card improve the speed of a genreal system? if any?

Grpahics card improve speed?

- Modern video cards can accelerate video (taking the job from the CPU) using DXVA.
- Nvidia cards can run a variety of video encoding tasks using CUDA.
- Windows Vista and 7 use the GPU to accelerate the interface.
That's about it. Decent video cards are really only needed for gaming and high-end 3D work.

It depends what are you doing on the system. If its just opening windows, not much - any basic card or modern integrated graphics can handle Windows Aero.
However, many applications are now being GPU accelerated, as are Video players (eg Windows Media Player). So in these tasks, having a good GPU can be a great performance advantage.
Apart from that, the general speed of you system will be more effected by the speed of your CPU, volume of RAM and storage drive (an SSD for example gives a huge boost in boot times and standard windows stuff).
