GRR! Temperamental home button!!

Apple are very inconsistent with this.

I got my 4 on launch day and developed the same issue. The day before the 4s launch i went to the braehead store and basically got told there was nothing they could do. Spoke to the manager who also confirmed this. Went through the usual sale of goods act stuff about being a quality product and would be expected to last longer than this etc etc. left it with him saying i would pu it in writing with 7 days notice before i comence legal action at the small claims court.

Ended up being in glasgow town centre later that day and went into the store there. Genius agreed it was faulty and i was out of warrant. Said she would take it through the back to open it up and try and clean the dust out for me. She came back 10 minutes later to tell me that there is a small wire behind the button that has been getting worn away and this was why i am having a problem. As a gesture of goodwill she would replace just this once for free. My new phone would come with a 90 day warranty.

Now i was very impressed with this. She was just a genius and not a manager and could authorise this. Stark contrast to the 1st store.

When i arrived home that night i was surprised to find a message on my home phone from the first store manager. He was askin if i could call him as he had contacted head office about my case and he was now in a position to rectify my issue. So they did get there in the end i suppose.

Be prepared to take it to a small claims as you will win if it is a manufacturing fault on a quality product that does not last 15 months.

Coincidently 2 mates in my office have the same issue and have now gone to the braehead store and got their out of warranty phone replaced no issue at all. Looks like there must have been a bit of a training issue with them being a new store.

All the best.

Hmm that's very positive news!! Unfortunately I had to cancel my appointment today but am re-booked for midweek so will update then but it's good to have ammo to hit them with now :D

I had the same prob and here's a blog post I wrote about a solution that worked for me..

My iPhone 4, which I’ve had for 8 months, has suddenly got a damn irritating problem .. the home button doesn’t work properly. Over the last week or so it’s got so bad that about 1 in 5 presses were working and I was becoming dead frustrated with it. So much so that a trip to the Apple Store 50Kms away was in order to see if they could fix it or get a new one .. but that’s a real PITA.

Updated to latest firmware – not change – still not working
Hard reboot – still not working

Then I discovered a fix…

and here’s how I fixed it… it’s so simple that it defies belief.

I blew hard into the charging socket 3 times – more responsive
Gave it a few raps on my thigh with the back (not the glass side) – working perfectly again!!!

That’s it .. it was probably a bit of dust in the sensor. And a bit of physical activity on it sorted it out!

Saved me a trip to the Apple Store.

5 days on now .. and it’s still 100% responsive!

PS .. I take no responsibility for any damage to anything. I was careful to use flesh rather than a hard knee for example. And be careful of damaging the glass side.

Well just to kill my curious side, I purchased some compressed air today - made no difference whatsoever. I tried blasting it into the charging port with the button not pressed, with the button pressed and also blasting it into the sides of the button with it pressed down. Still frequently not working at all, so appears it is completely goosed and needs replaced.

Got an appointment for Wednesday afternoon if I can be bothered making the 50 mile round trip

i have this problem as well...

do i need to make an appointment or can i just go in and see them?

nearest store is Apple on regent Street - London..

Well, button arrived through the post today - very quick I must admit, 7 days from the US :)

It is tiny and has a quite intricate connection, I think I'm starting to understand the challenge ahead if I decide to repair this myself

went into apple regent street yesterday. said I had problems with my home button.

guy looked up my phone id on his ipad. had 7 days left on my warranty. am getting a "new" phone today.

sweet.

i asked if it was refurbed he said no its a rebuilt phone. so some parts might have been recycled. sounds a little like apple bullcrap but still. they are replacing it.

I had my launch day iPhone 4 replaced for this exact same problem just a week before the warranty expired. It does seem to be a common one.

Same here 11 days before warrenty expired!

When I asked at the time they said they hadn't seen this problem before! Obviously it is common

Well for those waiting on my outcome, sorry to disappoint you but curiosity got the better of me and after an hour and a quarter this morning I have replaced the home button myself :D

I'm happy to report it's working great now, and everything else is still functioning, which is a bonus :p

Strange thing is this button seems to be a better fit that the last!! The old button seemed to be very slightly raised above the screen, whereas the new one is perfectly flush.

Oh and for anyone wondering, there was not a pick of dirt or dust under there, so clearly the theory that dirt is getting trapped underneath is not true at all. As has been mentioned above, the actual workings of the button are sealed, but below that was as clean as a whistle.

Yup, been fixing things for years - Nintendos / PC's / Laptops / Xbox'x / PS3's / Washing Machines / Tumble Dryers to name but a few, so am fairly capable of repairing things.

The worst thing about it was how tiny some of the screws are, but with a little bit of patience, a clean well laid out workspace, the correct tools and plenty of time it wasn't too bad in all honesty.

I'm actually glad I did it now, as I would have no fear in doing it again :)
