It was only a matter of time I guess.

Tried to turn it on tonight... RROD :(

3yrs and 5months.

So... what's the best chance of getting a newest design one?

Anything to look out for?

You lucky ****. To have one last 3 years and 3 months. I have had 3 in the last year and it's broken again!

Nothing to look out for, buy a new one and see what happens.

If you are buying from a store in town then ask the staff if you/they can check the flap on the back of the box to find out the current rating (12.1A = Jasper -- see here for guide and pictures http://www.anandtech.com/gadgets/showdoc.aspx?i=3472). I picked up an arcade unit at my local competitor in town a few weeks ago with no problem. Informed the manager what I was after and he was more than happy to check in the store room for a Jasper unit.

If you're buying online then it will be hit or miss depending on stock.

You should have tried to get it fixed by Microsoft.

T.

It's 3yrs and 3months old..

I think thats a fair life, not gonna get upset about it.

£129 inc free "Lips", so that kept the missus on side :)

As I see it, I've had a good use out of my launch day machine, and I get an extra controller, HDMI now etc. Will just move HDD to the new machine.

You dont need to fix it yourself. It will almost as cheap to get the warranty extended. £24 for a year. Wait a week or two and then phone up and get the 3 year old console fixed.

You will then have a spare for the cost of £24.

Costs about £5 to fix it yourself (screws, torx and thermal paste). My launch day console RROD'd last October, bought the bag of washers and fixings pack from an auction site and did it all myself. Been running fine ever since.

Bag of screws for £3 or so, and knowing you've actually fixed the cause of the RRoD... I know which I would go for.

They are sending out very recent consoles now. Not only that your then covered for the 2nd biggest flaw the drive needing replacing. They won't fix his console they will send him a completely different one and it will have another years warranty. Oh and a free month of live :D

Are they still replacing on a like for like basis (non-HDMI with Opus revision and HDMI for HDMI)?

Yes mate, so far anyway. My latest console to go wrong was replaced with a december build. So it was basically new as Jan at the time.

It was still non hdmi though, but for the record has just gone wrong again!

I did wonder where you were as I had been waiting for the your message to meet up on Left 4 Dead.
