My friend has an HP dv2000 laptop, with loads of viruses on it so hes asked me to wipe it/reinstal windows. Had a quick look around the laptop, its hdd is split into 2 partitions, a large(C:) partition with the os and all files, also a smaller (D:) partition with backup drivers.

All seems fine so i stick in my windows disc and restart.
Into bios > boot from cd drive
"press any key to boot from cd"
all seems to be going well.

Then it asks to choose either repair console or start windows.
I choose start windows to do a normal installation...
It waits a few seconds then tells me i have no hdds :S

Im assuming that its powered off the hdds to save power (despite having it plugged into mains). Am i right? How do i get around this?

Thats what im doing.
Option1 = repair
Option2= Start windows normally.

Then > "no hdds detected" :S :@

That won't be it - HDDS are only turned off within Windows, and even then the drive with Windows on will almost never turn off anyway.

/cry

SO what else could it be?
Requires 3rd party scsi/raid software?
Its actually an eIDE/SATA drive. Will it need 3rd party drivers?
(Im a SATA virgin :O)

omg...this is turning into such a joke :(

i'v managed to get the drivers via a proxy...
so i figured stick them on my usb drive, plug it into laptops, and all my problems are solved.
BUT NO! It wants them on a floppy :@
The laptop does not even have a floppy drive!
Is there an emulator or something i can use to fake my usb drive as an external usb floppy drive?

You could always make a slipstream XP disk with SP1 and SP2 on the disk.
This will eliminate the SATA problem because SP2 provides support without the need for 3rd party drivers. :)

There are a few guides on how to make a slip disk via: google, but it will mean having to download SP1 and 2 onto your HDD and they are quite large.

my lappy has the same sot of partitions, all i did was use the backup partition and create a cd and the use hat to reintsall windows. i will set the lappy back up to how the manufacturer did it. :eek:

im sure my disc has sp2 on it :<
anyway im gonna try and use a prog called nLite which lets you burn a windows disc with all the drivers i need already on it. Designed for anatended windows installations.

If this dont work im giving up on it - its not even mine :D

You don't need to apply SP1 then SP2, as SP2 has those SP1 updates plus more. So just update it with SP2.
