Get SMS Backup & Restore from Play Store.
It'll back up all your threads. Copy the backup to your N5.
When restoring you can elect to restore a set number from each thread or a time period. It'll also check for duplicates.
It won't backup MMS so make sure you save any important attachments!

Do I have to install SMS Backup & Restore on the Nexus 5 after backup?
Also where do I copy the backup file too?

Well yeah, otherwise you won't be able to do the 'Restore' part.
Doesn't matter where you save the file, you just import it via the app on the new phone and it does the rest.

Once I've done the restore, I can delete SMS Backup & Restore and the sms will just be like normal as if the phone had received them?

Yep (that's what used to happen anyway)
Just tested out SMS Backup & Restore transferring SMS and call logs from my Honor 7 to an old Android tablet via Google Drive prior to transferring the Honor 7 SMS and call logs to my new Mi 8 Lite.
After transferring them to the tablet they appear on the tablet while using the SMS Backup & Restore app's messaging skin, but soon as I change the skin back to the standard tablet messaging skin they disappear. So what's the point in that?
If I use this to transfer all my old Honor 7 SMS to my new Mi 8 Lite I have to keep some 3rd party app low rate messaging skin as my messaging app?
