Ok here is my problem, auto settings are 2.5-3-3-5, when I manually change it to the 2-3-2-5 timings, I am lucky to get a re-boot into windows, I end up having a Bios Rom checksum error & cannot boot up which I end up having to reset the cmos then re-flash the Bios, I'm using 1009 just for info.

Anyone able to give me any advice I dont think I have done anything any different to anyone else & this is running at stock speed also.

Would appreciate any info.

Thanks,

I was just testing a set of Gskill ZX for a friend

Worked fine for me using the same mobo as you? stock timings 2-3-2-5 @2.6vDimm.

You say it works on auto?

You may have something else set-up incorrectly, but if you suspect there is a problem with the ram take out one stick and use the DIMM slot nearest the CPU for testing. Go into BIOS and select the timings, and then save+exit and run memtest for a while?

If the ASUS board doesn't like the memory settings it will hang at the black device screen, or sometimes it will ask you to load the BIOS etc. At this point just power off and restart, go into BIOS and correct the memory settings.

Well this is really strange, I was running my Windows installed 150gb raptor on Sata 3, backup 74 raptor on sata 2, so I switched these round so that my 150gb was on Sata 1, 74gb backup raptor on Sata 2 - Voila! stock timings 2-3-2-5 @2.6vDimm (1T) :) :) :)

Also my system hasnt hanged on the Windows Home Edition logo on 5 boot-up's so far so looks like the sata's are really fussy.

Thanks for the info by the way I'll test the memory anyway. :)

Yes but I never dreamed that something like that would make that much difference, I can have a good nights sleep now. Had 1 mobo with a duff pci-e slot which took nearly a week to sort out then this which has taken a few days, can finally get back to some serious gaming.

Tempted to Overclock the FX chip though, should be fairly easy but I'm not gonna be too complacent!

I wonder if I just increase the multiplier to x13 or x14 from 2.4ghz to 2.6ghz/2.8ghz the ram will be still stable. . . .

In theory yes, but from what I have read sometimes the mobo or whatever? doesn't like the high multi.

Give it a shot but ultimately you would be better off by using a combination off HTT + Memory freq + CPU MHz to achieve the perfect overclock. .

You follow?

Aye, to be honest I've never bothered with overclocking ever! I'll give it a go anyway, I should be able to work it out from what I've read etc etc over the last few years.

I doubt no games with give me any trouble running at maximum settings anyway (dont quote me if I'm wrong! :p )

I dont think I will ever buy another FX chip they are really nice but the cost is just ridiculous - what the hell I was thinking of when I bought it I dunno bought it November 04!

Hi,

Myself and a heap of people on these forums are running £100-£150 pound silicon squares at the same speed or faster than what your processor is, quite a big saving!

However if you apply some serious cooling and good overclocking tactics you could take that cheap to speeds beyond out reach!

I think the FX-57 is meant for:

1) Rich Arabs and willy wavers

2) People who want processing power with minimum fuss

3) Extreme overclockers who will take that chip to another level

What you got your opteron running at & with what timings? just curious.

I coudnt agree more, I actually got a really nice tax rebate back around september 04, so went abit over the top on my upgrade FX-53/X800XT PE etc etc wanted mininum fuss & I guess there was abit of willy waving in there as well!

I know one thing for sure, when I upgrade my cpu/mobo I'll be looking for good value for money so hopefully what the Opterons have to offer there will be something similar when AM2 is settled in, cant see myself upgrading for at least a year - £100/£150 on my next CPU as well.

Cheers,

2.8GHz (10x280) 1.425vCore was where I left off, been playing with memory for a few days and buying 36GHz of opteron that will hopefully overclock to 46.8GHz!!

Well mine at those speeds was only stable at 2.7vDimm, you say yours was totally stable at 2.6 - does this mean my ram is faulty?
