I'll be generous and give it 3/5.
- Premuim/Standard thing is utterly retarded. They should have only included Premium models and added cars via DLC.
- Visuals are inconstant. One minute it can look superb (premium car models and city tracks look great), but the next minute it looks utter crap. Shadows are laughably poor.
- Sound is terrible. Weak engine noises, and what is with that crash/bump sound? Why does it sound like somebody banging a drum?
- AI is as rubbish as ever.
- Slow, clunky, unintuitive menus.
- Poor upgrade options. Why can't you upgrade the brakes? Why such a small choice of wheels?
Now on to the most important thing, the driving physics. Coming from GT5P and the Time Trial demos I was not expecting great things, but to be honest I was pleasantly surprised. In the other thread I actually put them ahead of Forza 3's physics. Having played the game for longer now I have changed my opinion. There's something not quite right about the physics engine, the Lotus Top Gear challenge highlights this, they handle like Tesco's trollies. It's like the physics engine is being pushed to hard, like the engine isn't complex enough to meet the demands that are being asked of it. It's quite a 'simplistic' feeling physics engine. In comparison, Forza 3's physics are the opposite. They feel more complex, more 'organic', but at the same time a bit dumbed down and 'tamed'.
Basically GT5 feels like it has a fairly simple physics engine that has been tweaked to behave as real as it can, whereas FM3 feels like it has a complex underlying physics engine that has been deliberately 'softened' and 'tamed'.
There aspects of GT5 that I like, the karts are fun, the NASCAR is more fun and more technical than I was expecting, and the rallying is fun. But over all it's a disappointment, and you come away wondering how a game that was in development for 6 years can feel so unfinished. What have they been doing all these years?
